CONDITIONS were very difficult for both teams in this encounter and it was the winners who obviously dealt with them much better. Carlow opened the scoring in the first minute through a try under the posts by Jeff McDermott which was converted by Barry Purcell.
Portarlington replied with two penalties in the 7th and 20 minute which they followed with a try in the 21st minute to lead by four points after 21 minutes and they stayed ahead. Carlow missed a penalty which could have reduced the margin after 25 minutes. The score was 14-32 at half time.
Only score in the second half was a penalty by Portarlington to leave the score 14 to 35.
Carlow are away to Monkstown next week.
