KNOCKBEG WAS well represented on the Irish Schools mountain running team that ran in Edinburgh on Sunday last.
SCHOOLS ATHLETICS Three Knockbeg athletes, Kevin Brennan, James Griffin and Seán McCormack, had been selected to compete. Kevin competed in the Under-15 race, where he finished an excellent seventh, after being in eighth place at the top of the hill.
James and Seán competed in the Under-17 race, finishing 14th and 17th respectively. Their team finished just outside the medals in fourth.
Interestingly, all three athletes are from different clubs, in different counties. Kevin runs with St. Abban's, James with St. Laurence O Toole's and Seán with Gowran.
By qualifying for the international team they joined a special but growing group of international athletes in Knockbeg. Knockbeg has had eight different international athletes in the calendar year so far competing across the range of athletics, a ratio that few if any schools in the country would match.
Next to take centre stage will be Conor Daly, also of St. Abban's, who qualified for the Irish School combined events team which competes again in Scotland in December.
