THE FR. Hayden Shield competition always produces exciting handball for the young players in the county and this year was no different, Garryhill were the holders of the trophy but this year they had to hand back the title to Tinryland after two fantastic nights of handball.
The competition is played on a home and way basis and Garryhill had home venue on the first night but couldn't take advantage of this as Tinryland won by 11 aces overall .
The second match was always going to be an uphill battle for Garryhill as the stronger Tinryland team with home venue and an 11 ace lead were always in command on the night.
Jack Murphy/Evan McGuire (T) drew with Ciaran Dowling/PJ Ryan (G) 15/12 12/15, Laura Donovan/Sinead Hayden (T) dft Jamie Ryan/Paul Kennedy (G) 15/5 15/7 and Brian McGrath/Patrick Regan (T) drew with Jack Tracey/Ronan Barrault (G) 10/15 15/10. Overall Tinryland 93, Garryhill 59. Sinead Hayden who is an grand- niece of Fr.Hayden and captain of the Tinryland team received the trophy on behalf of her delighted team mates.

Meanwhile in the Duffy Cup competition in Group 1 Garryhill 1 team of John Ryan, Sean Ryan, John Rossiter and Andy Ryan have qualified for the semi - final after good wins over Tinryland 2 team of Martin Clancy, Michael Doyle, Kevin Barrett and Steve Doyle by a margin of 12 aces and the Monavea team of Michael Donovan, Andrew Dowling, Paddy Donovan and Thomas Lennon by a margin of 6 aces.
In Group 2 Tinryland 1 team of Pádraic Townsend, David Donovan, Barry Ramsey and Martin Mullins defeated Borris by 20 aces in the first round, Garryhill 2 team of Kevin Rossiter, Oliver Ryan, Thomas Donohue and Brendan Ryan also defeated the Borris team of David King, Francis King, Patrick Hynes and Billy King by a similar margin, Garryhill 2 now play Tinryland 1 on Monday night to see who will top the group. The final of the Duffy cup is fixed for Friday the 14th at a venue to be decided.
