CARLOW squash stars produced some very impressive results at the Leinster Junior Closed Squash Championships last weekend with the girls reaching three finals, at under-13,15 and 17 levels. Niamh O'keefe came out on top taking the under17 title in emphatic style.
Casey Luther (2) faced her very familiar opponent Stephanie Ryan (1) in the girls U15 final.
These girls play to a very high standard and this final did not dissapoint. Ryan again claimed top spot winning what was a very tough and skilfull match 11/9, 12/12, 6/11, 11/9.
Sheila O'keefe who has left the under-13 ranks finished a very good third following her win over Lauren Smith (Sutton) on a score of 3/0.
Niamh O'keefe had little difficulty winning the under-17 girls section which was run on a round robin basis winning all her four matches without the loss of a single game.
The surpise finalist of the day was Clíodhna Ní Shé, seeded 3 in the girls under-13 event she comfortably won her first round game and really showed her potential when she defeated the No2 seed Christina O'dea(2) in a thrilling game 9-11 13-15 11-7 11-5 5-11.
In her first major final, Clíodhna met No1 seed Lily Lloyd, the first went to Lloyd 11/9 but Clíodhna leveled on the same score 11/9.
A long 3rd game saw the Dubliner win 14/12 to go 2/1 up. In the end Clíodhna tired and Lloyd won 11/4
In the boys under-13 Jack Doyle (4) finished in 4th place, the first round saw Jack play the No 5 seed Frank O'dea which Jack won 3/1 10-12 3-11 11-5 9-11.
The No1 seed Luke Logan proved too strong in the semi-final winning 3/0 but the Sunday game for 3rd/4th position was a lot closer that the 7-11 6-11 6-11 suggests.
In the under-17 boys event the two Carlow lads Ryan Luther and Cian Doyle finished in 4th and 7th positions.
These players will all be out next weekend competing in the Carlow Junior Squash Open which features a 22 player visiting group from Liverpool to name but a few.
