O'Keeffe crowned Ulster champion

CARLOW'S Sheila O'Keeffe was crowned Ulster Junior Open Squash champion when she took the U-15 title with a great win over local girl Vicky White by 3-2. Sheila defeated Caitlín Toner comfortably 3-0 in the semi-final and was thrilled with her overall performance.

There were just two players from Carlow at the East of Ireland Junior Squash Open held at Sutton LTC this weekend, Jack Doyle and Shiela O'Keeffe competed in the U-15 sections.

Jack was seeded 3 for the event but lost his first round match to the number 4 seed Morgan Kelly in a five-setter. Kelly came out on top on a score of 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, 118, and 11-2. The second round saw Jack play Lorcan O'Malley which Doyle won 3/0 11-3,11-6, 11-1. Playing for fifth/sixth place Jack had another tough five-setter and this time he came on top defeating Brian Collins 7-11,11-8, 114, 4-11, 11-7 for fifth place.

Shiela O'Keeffe fresh from her recent win at the Ulster Junior Open had a bye in her first round and in the second round, Shiela defeated Dubliner, Emily Duignan 3/0 , 11-1, 11-7, 11-1.

Against Sinead Walsh, the number 2 seed in the semi's, Shiela played well but lost out 3/0, 11-6, 11-2, 11-3. Walsh faced a very strong Stephanie Ryan in the final which Ryan won comfortably.

In her final game Shiela defeated Elllie Mc Veigh 3/1, with the game scores at 10-12, 11-3, 11-8, 11-4 to finish fourth.
