Mullins at the top of his game
IF HORSE trainers are the football players of their trade then, at the moment, Willie Mullins must be a combination of Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo.
It seems the man can just do no wrong and last weekend he was in the thick of it again when the Carlow maestro sent Un De Sceaux to Auteuil for the second time this spring on Saturday, and the unbeaten six-year-old won even more easily than he did in March.
Ruby Walsh brought his return from injury forward to partner the French-bred, who has now won all his nine starts.
The Bagenalstown based trainer is raising eyebrows this week too in the wake of Punchestown as the Willie Mullins' pair of On His Own and Boston Bob top a list of 10 declared runners for Wednesday's Bibby Financial Services Ireland Punchestown Gold Cup.
On His Own was last seen finishing a short-head second to Lord Windermere in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, while Boston Bob struck gold in the two-and-a-half-mile Melling Chase at Aintree earlier this month.
Ruby Walsh has opted to partner Boston Bob, with Paul Townend aboard On His Own, having ridden the horse to claim the Thyestes Chase earlier in the season.
He has eight runners in the three Grade One races at Punchestown today - Faugheen, Valseur Lido, Wicklow Brave, Turban, Twinlight, Ballycasey, Mozoltov and Djakadam - and will have 30 runners or so there over the course of the five days.
