Woman critical after car plunges into River Barrow

Published 30/08/2014 | 00:00

A woman has remained in critical condition in hospital over the weekend after the vehicle in which she was travelling plunged into the River Barrow at Bagenalstown on Thursday night.

The jeep the woman was driving overturned after ploughing through a wall at the riverside near Aldi. Passers-by immediately rushed to the woman's assistance and attempted to remove her from the submerged vehicle.

One of the men on the scene was ex-fireman John Doran, who happened to be out for a walk at the time, and he and another man managed to pull the woman from the vehicle and bring her back to the river's edge.

The woman was immediately rushed to St Luke's hospital where Gardaí have said she remains in critical condition. However, were it not for the quick actions of two brave passers-by, it would most certainly have been a tragic tale from the banks of the Barrow.
