Carlow Volunteer Centre announced Give it a Swirl Day, Ireland's very first national day of volunteering last week.
On Wednesday, September 26, local organisations will open their doors to the public and ask them to get stuck in and lend a hand. The day will highlight the importance and rewards associated with volunteering even a small commitment can make a difference and will be lots of fun to boot! Official national sponsors AIB Better Ireland Programme and Wyeth encourage people of all ages and abilities to join in and register on www.giveitaswirl.ie for a project of their choice.
Model, mother and volunteer, Vivienne Connolly is lending her support to the project and asks people to get involved! She is herself promoting a bag-packing fundraiser in the Carlow Tesco branch on the day. I will be out fundraising with Temple Street Hospital on September 26. Being a mum it's a cause close to my heart. I supported them in Charity You're a Star, and am always looking for ways to help. People can really get involved with charities and projects in their community on the day.'
Projects in Co Carlow include pitching in on a Garden Make-over at Forward Steps Family Resource Centre in Tullow, getting the paintbrush out and creating a playground and murals at Open Door Community Development Project in Carlow town. There will also be a Youth Action project in Glynn.
The public is encouraged to log on to www.giveitaswirl.ie and register for a project. Alternatively, people can call the Carlow Volunteer Centre in Castlehill, Carlow at 059 9137562.
Yvonne McKenna of Volunteer Centres Ireland explained charities and environmental groups don't just need money, they also need people to give up their time. You get to meet new people from your area and work towards a common goal.'
Give It a Swirl Day is an initiative of Volunteer Centres Ireland (VCI) who promote and develop volunteering in Ireland, locally and nationally. For more information, please visit www.volunteer.ie
