THE people of Carlow may have noticed a familiar face on Ireland AM this week as the mother of a popular Carlow entertainer was honoured with a special birthday visit from the show.

Richie Kavanagh is a man that needs no introduction all over Carlow, and indeed the whole country, but this week the spotlight was not on Richie, but on the woman who taught him everything he knows, his beloved mammy, Mollie.

Mollie celebrated a landmark birthday recently, reaching the ripe old age of 96 and to mark the occasion, the TV3 crew paid her a special visit. 'Ireland AM were looking for special birthdays to be sent into their show,' said granddaughter Olivia Maher.

'Then they would choose someone to call out to and surprise them with a lovely cake and the Top 100 books from Easons. Nana was chosen for July and she was delighted. She loves to read and cannot wait to get tucked into the 100 books!' Mollie enjoyed a great chat with TV3's Noel Cunnigham about her experiences before blowing out the candles on her birthday cake to a great round of applause.

She was delighted to be surrounded by family members on the special day and the presence of the camera crews only served to make the occasion even more memorable.
