A COUNCIL rent collector was hit over the head and robbed on his way to the bank.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a smash- and- grab on council rent and rate collector, John Maher, in Tullow on Wednesday.
At around 3 p. m. he left the council offices with what is believed to have been around € 5,000 in a money satchel to walk just 100m to the nearby AIB bank.
On route, he was attacked from behind. He was hit on the head and knocked to the ground by the culprit who then took off and ran out in front of a tractor and traffic towards the link road.
The culprit is described as being 5ft 10ins and was wearing blue denim jeans and a dark anorak. He had the hood pulled up over his head and wore gloves.
Afterwards, he made his way up the link road and turned left up the old Chapel Lane where sighting of him was lost.
It was on this lane that gardaí later discovered the money bag and gloves abandoned by the culprit.
' The sun was shining in Tullow at the time so he would have been obvious in a dark anorak with his hood up, someone might have noticed him,' said Sgt Joe Hanley.
' We are asking them to make contact.'
