The ethnic food store on the Tullow Road where vandals sprayed a racist message on the shutters

RACISM reared its ugly head in Carlow town last week as an ethnic food store on the Tullow Road fell victim to mindless vandals.

The culprits spray painted a racist message on the shutters of the shop after it had closed and it has caused great shock to a number of people in the town.

Carlow Tropical Foods, which is in the retail estate on the Tullow Road, has operated there for four years and owner Paul Donatus says he has never experienced anything like this before.

'This is the first time we have experienced anything of this nature,' said Paul. 'We're just hoping it's an isolated incident and it won't happen again.

'It is disappointing, but in general we have found the people of Carlow to be very supportive over the past four years.

'Really it is just the actions of one ignorant fool.'

Paul said that he did make contact with the Gardaí about the graffiti, but he had not made a formal complaint.

'We're hoping that it is just an isolated incident,' he said.

'However, ourselves and other businesses in the retail estate here are looking to install CCTV cameras and have them monitored by a security company.

'Hopefully that will also deter anything else like this happening again.'
