Pádraig through to next round of 'Voice'
Carlow People journalist Pádraig Byrne managed to make it through his Voice of Ireland Battle on Sunday night and claim a place in the live shows, due to begin on March 16.
The Wexford native faced stiff opposition from Dublin music shop owner Paddy Reilly as they sang 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' by Tears for Fears for a place in the next round.
'The battles are pretty tough,' said Pádraig. 'It's a difficult situation because you have to work together to make the song work, but at the end of the day, someone is going home. Paddy was a big personality and I suppose at times it was tough to try and do my own thing. I felt the battle didn't go very well on the night, but thankfully Bressie picked me and I have a chance to make up for it in the live shows.'
This year Bressie was helped by assistant coach Sarah Harding who was also able to pass some wisdom onto Pádraig. 'Sarah is a lovely person,' he said. 'I'm not a big Girls Aloud fan, but she has achieved a massive amount in the music business. She's really down to earth and made the whole process that bit easier.'
Pádraig has also been getting some advice from Borris native and former winner Pat Byrne following a recent gig in Wexford at which the pair performed together. 'It was great to meet up with Pat again,' he said. 'We know each other from college and he hasn't changed a bit. He's been through it all and he basically just told me to be myself and I'll do just fine which was lovely to hear.'
Pádraig's first live show will take place on March 23 and he's hoping he can count on the people of Carlow to get behind him and hopefully another red-headed Byrne can take the competition by storm!
