THE children's referendum passed easily in Carlow-Kilkenny with more than 63% of people voting yes.
Just over half of the electorate turned out to cast a vote and just before 1pm on Sunday the final count was in. Out of an electorate of 102,643, 51% took time to cast a vote.
63.3% were in favour of carrying the 31st amendment to the constitution and 36.7% were against it with 307 spoiled votes.
Carlow Fine Gael TD Pat Deering said he believed it to be one of the most important referendums in the history of the State and he welcomed the results.
He said: 'By voting yes you have played your part in helping us to protect children and support families. For too long the best interests of the child have been an after though in this country.
'It was your chance to make a difference to how children are treated in Ireland,' he said.
