Waterways Ireland has dismissed opposition to its plans to develop the Barrow Line as 'premature'. Plans are afoot to place a solid stone cycling track on the banks of the River, but Waterways Ireland insists that nothing has been finalised yet and it are still in the pre-planning phase.

Locals in Graiguenamanagh have vowed to oppose the plans in any way they can, saying that it will disturb the natural beauty of the area. 'We believe that there's no room for a cycle track and the walking trail that's currently there,' said Billy Hore of the Save the Barrow Line campaign. 'We don't think it will do anything for tourism potential in the area and will do far more harm than good.'

According to Billy, people frequently cycle along the Barrow Line as it is and it has actually been complimented by those who have travelled from all over the country to cycle there.

As well as disrupting scenery and the rich local wildlife, the locals also have concerns about the maintenance of a cycle track along the Barrow.

'A track like that would have to be well maintained,' said Billy. 'When the river floods, at least the grass will go back to normal itself after a time. With a track it would have to be maintained and there would be potholes etc to contend with.'

Waterways Ireland have pointed to the economic benefits of a similar project in Mayo, The Greenways, which they say created at least 38 new jobs and has brought in around €7million.

Billy says that Graiguenamangh is 'totally against' Waterways Ireland's plan and that they will do whatever they can to oppose it.
