IT WAS news for those with an artistic flair last week as Carlow County Council announced the provision of bursaries and arts acts grants to assist professional artists.

The bursaries are intended to help arts professionals in their development, in the creation of art and bringing it to the public along.

Those eligible include writers, composers and visual artists who are originally from Carlow or currently reside in Carlow. Arts Acts grants are also now being made available.

Ann Scully from the arts department in the council explained: ' The 2003 Arts Act permits a local authority to provide financial assistance for the purposes of stimulating public interest in the arts, promoting the knowledge, appreciation and practices of the arts, or improving standards in the arts.

'Application details for the schemes may be obtained from the arts office in the Carlow County Council offices on the Athy Road. Arts Acts grants can be downloaded from carlow.ie

' The closing date for receipt of the completed applications is midday on Wednesday, February 20.'
