A CARLOW ACTRESS is set to appear on our screens in January in the hugely popular Australian soap Home and Away.
29-year-old Alison McGirr, who is formerly from Rathoe, plays the role of Molly Brenner and is engaged to actor and director Sam Atwell, who is best known for his role as Kane Philips in Home and Away.
The pair hope to move to Carlow in a year or two to live in the home of her Great-Great Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Grandfather in Coolroe, Ardattin. Sam plans on seeing the country while Alison, who also does a lot of stage work, hopes to perform at The Abbey Theatre, work on a Martin McDonagh film and do anything at all with Brendan Gleeson.
Alison is a past pupil of Tullow Community School and her mother is formerly Marie Carroll from Rathoe, married to Tom McGirr from Tyrone.
'She followed her dream,' said her proud aunt Joan Carroll from Rathoe. ' When her mother and father and the whole lot of us were telling her to go and get a proper job she went and did a degree in drama at university and now she is living her dream.'
Alison has had a reoccurring guest role in the show and will return once more in the coming weeks.
Although Alison was born in Australia, her family moved back to Ireland to Carlow in 1996 and Alison attended Tullow Community School while her brother and sister Siobhan and Thomas attended Rathoe NS.
Her parents bought and renovated her grandfather's house in Ardattin.
'There is a sentimental attachment to it,' added Joan. 'They are hoping now herself and Sam will come home and live in it for a year.'
