A Carlow journalist has been given the opportunity of a lifetime to go and report on life in a developing country.
Elaine Byrne from Tullow has been awarded funding under the Simon Cumbers Media Fund which aims to promote more and better media coverage of development issues. The fund was set up in memory of Irish Journalist Simon Cumbers who was killed in Saudi Arabia while working with the BBC in 2004. Under the fund, journalists are invited to submit proposals for coverage of a development issue which will involve travelling to a developing country.
Elaine was funded to travel to the island of Kirabati in the Pacific Ocean where she will explore the realities of climate change through the prism of the Kirabati experience and the impact of climate change on the everyday lives of the I-Kirabati people. She will then produce a feature article for publication in the Sunday Independent.
