Community rocked by tragic death of Michael
THE COMMUNITY of Bagenalstown was plunged into grief in recent days following the tragic death of a young father-of-two.
Michael Kelly Jr. from Green Road was found to have died tragically at home on Tuesday.
Son of Michael and Kay and brother to David and Aidan, Michael Jr (41) was a well known car salesman and worked at Pratt's Citroen Dealership in Carlow. He was married to Rita and had two sons, Michael and Jordan.
Cars and all things motor related were a huge passion of Michael's.
He was a member of Carlow Car Club and during his younger days was greatly interested in hot-rodding. Michael's strong association with sporting organisations in the community was reflected in the guard of honour provided by Erins Own Hurling Club, St. Andrew's Football Club and Michael Davitt GAA Club of which Michael was Secretary and where his own sons now play.
Michael raced with Carlow Car Club from 2000-2008 during which time he enjoyed many podium finishes at races in Mondello Park, Northern Ireland and in Anglesey in Wales.
In recent years he assisted fellow racers at events and was well thought of in the club.
'Michael's father would have been a member dating back to the seventies and his brother Aidan is also a member. The whole family is highly regarded from within the club and Michael's death is so sad and tragic. The representation from the world of motor sport was testament to this. The Chairman and the Chief Executive of the Motor Sport Commission along with many competitors paid their respects at the funeral,' said a club spokesperson.
The Kelly Family wishes to thank the community and their neighbours, friends and relatives for all the support received during this sad time.
A large number of mourners joined the Kelly family for Michael's funeral on Friday to say their final goodbyes.
Funeral mass took place at St. Andrew's Church, Bagenalstown and was followed by burial at Newtown Cemetery.
