Carlow doctor Sean McGuire is to join Professor Brendan Drumm as CEO of the Health Service Executive. Originally from Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo ,Dr. McGuire now works from his practice in Clayton Hall in Carlow town.
Dr McGuire is married to Joan and has two daughters, Laura and Sinead. He studied medicine at the NUI, Galway, and trained as a GP in Ireland. He practised for five years in Ireland and then moved to Kent, where he stayed for nine years.
While he was in Britain he set up the first GP co-op in 1989. In fact he was the driving force behind the whole GP co-operative movement in Ireland and the UK. In 1995 Dr McGuire returned to Ireland and in June 1999 he started a national pilot scheme, CAREDOC in Carlow District Hospital.
