FIGURES released by the Irish Red Cross show that carers in County Carlow give more than 40,000 hours of unpaid care to the county's sick, elderly and vulnerable every week.
Of the 2,156 carers in Carlow, 43% regularly work a minimum of 1 to 14 hours a week, while a further 43% work between 15 and 43 hours a week.
In order to highlight the outstanding work being done by carers in Carlow, the Irish Red Cross is calling for nominations for the 2014 Carer of the Year Awards. The awards are open to any member of the public currently providing voluntary care and four regional winners will be selected before the announcement of the national winner in October.
The 2014 winner will receive a relaxing hotel break for two and a cash prize. If you know of someone locally who deserves recognition for the outstanding work they do, then nomination forms can be filled out at www.redcross.ie up to September 5.
