ONE OF Carlow's largest car dealers announced that they were closing on Friday evening.
The main Opel dealer for Carlow, F.M. Autos on the Wexford Road, announced that it would cease trading at the close of business on Friday because of the decline in the car market.
The dealers, which was the main distributor for Opel, SsangY-ong and Chevrolet in Carlow, employed 20 people in busier times but had recently cut back to a staff of nine. 'Despite management and employees' efforts to maintain its operations in Carlow, the continued decline of the market since 2008 left us with no alternative but to cease trading,' said John O'Rourke, dealer principal. He added that they will be contacting all of their annual customers to inform them of the closure and he thanked everyone for their loyal support. 'In business you just have to make a call, we just couldn't keep trading,' he said. 'Suppliers and creditors, everyone will be paid in an orderly fashion.' F.M. Autos took over the Opel dealership from Brennan's on the Tullow Road in December 1999 and more recently had relocated to the Wexford Road.
