A total of €11,000 in funding has been granted for a new state of the art skate park in Carlow.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs James Reilly as part of a Recreation Capital Grants Scheme.

A skate park was seen as a good option as it provides a social and recreational outlet for children and youngsters of all ages and will be a positive, safe and attractive place for young people to gather. Local TD Pat Deering was delighted with the allocation and said: 'The summertime is upon us and, with this wonderful weather, families are spending a lot of time at playgrounds, in parks and at the beach. Safe and fun play areas are a major draw to any town and they are a wonderful facility for children and parents alike.'

Deputy Deering also said that by making facilities like the skate park readily available to young people, it was decreasing the chances of them taking up smoking, drinking and other vices. The funding came as part of a €250,000 investment nationwide and Deputy Deering has described it as a 'small but significant step in improving facilities for the locals of Carlow as we move towards recovery.'
