Runners limber up to raise funds for cancer support

Runners from all over the county and further afield are getting set for the second annual Carlow Marathon which will take place on Sunday, September 28 with a total of four races in Leighlinbridge.
The event is run by Leighlin Parish Sports Development in conjunction with a designated charity. Last year the Carer's Association benefited greatly from the event, raising over €4,000 for the cause. This year's chosen charity is Éist Cancer Support Centre who offer a range of supports to all those affected by cancer across the county and in surrounding areas.
Leighlin Parish Sports Development was formed in 2008 to oversee the development of sports facilities in the parish and last year they decided to broaden their commitments to the local community by establishing the Carlow Marathon.
The event is fully registered and affiliated with Run Ireland and AAI and is being held in the hopes of raising some much needed funds for a worthwhile cause and promoting health and well being in both a competitive and fun way.
There were initially some scheduling problems with the event as it clashed with other local runs, however, now all of these problems have been rectified and the race will go ahead on September 28. Last year over 400 runners took to the route and this year organisers are expecting even more.
There will be four different runs this year - a 22km half marathon, an 11km mini-marathon, a 5km race and a 5km fun run/walk. The first three runs will be chip-timed and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Registration for the event is now open through the Run Ireland website and registration forms are also available from the Leighlin Parish Centre and can be emailed or posted to anyone interested in entering.
This event proved a great success last year and is expected to grow from year to year with local charities benefitting.
