March session of Song and Story

The March session in the monthly series of Song and Story will be held in Rathoe Hall on Sunday next 23rd March at 8pm. As usual admission is free and refreshments will be served.

COFFEE DAY

A Coffee Day will be held at the home of the late Rita Nolan in Ballon Village on Wednesday, 26th March starting at 9.00am until late that night. All monies raised will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society/ Carlow-Kilkenny Homecare. Donations of daffodils and cakes would be appreciated. Also volunteers are needed to collect for street collections and in the local shops. Contact Valerie in 087 9180310.

CLONEGAL/ KILDAVIN

BOXING CHAMPION

Congratulations to Matty O'Leary, Kildavin who was crowned Wexford Champion on 23rd February Young Mattie O' Leary from Kildavin has been making a name for himself in the ring as he adds another title to his belt.

On Sunday 27th January 2013 he won his fourth year in a row Wexford County Finals boxing for his division. Matty went forward to compete in the Leinster Championships but with just one point in the difference Matty took home silver.

This is tremendous achievement for someone of his age and in a few years' time; Matty will be like our hero's Paddy Barnes and Katie Taylor, with the support of the entire Country behind him. We wish Mattie continued success and the people of Kildavin and surrounding areas are very proud of him. Mattie's family and especially his mother, Vera, are a great support to him and he deserves all the support and encouragement he can get. Keep up the good work Mattie. We are delighted you are doing so well.

GAA LOTTO

The Kildavin/Clonegal GAA lotto was held in Dunne's Lounge, Clonegal, on Sunday 9th March. Numbers drawn were 1, 5, 10 and 19. There was no winner of the jackpot of €5,400.

Winners that matched three were, Colette Doyle, Clonmore, Miceal Ryan, Moss House, Cathy Tracey, Cranemore, Mary Gibson, Kildavin, Andrew Nolan, Ballinstraw, Peg Nolan, c/o C Fitz, Kathy Connors, Kildavin, Joe Mernagh Snr, Mary Murphy, Crowsgrove and Padraig Kavanagh, Australia, receiving €15 each. Sellers Prize goes to Carmel Gibson. The next draw will take place in Osborne's Lounge, Clonegal on Sunday 23rd March with a Jackpot of €5,600.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Slaney Valley Boys Basketball team played a brilliant match against St. Lazerian's on Sunday 2nd March, but were unfortunately beaten. Well done to all the children for their hard work and determination.

Well done to the girls' Basketball team as they had super game and went on to the final where they met another very strong St Lazerian's team. Congratulations to both teams they did Slaney Valley proud.

The U11 mixed team played on Sunday 9th March. The team played an amazing game of basketball for such a young age. The most outstanding player on the day was vice Captain John Henry Kirwan. The team played brilliantly and fought to the bitter end but lost a very exciting game to the eventual winners. U11

A special thank you to Christopher Cassidy and Caoimhe Redmond who helped train the team every week and gave tremendous support at their match on Sunday.

The next basketball event will take place on Sunday 6th April, when children from, Kildavin, Ardattin and Clonegal will play in a Fun Fundraising Basketball Tournament, where they will "pay to play". Entrance fee is by donation and all monies collected will go to the Carlow Hospice. A special thanks to Ballon Hall Committee who have allowed us the use of the hall for the day free of charge. Also to Michael McAssey who has provided the medals and plaques for the competitions which will be held throughout the day.

CLONMORE

SENIOR CITIZENS

A Night of Music, Story-telling and song in aid of Clonmore, Kilquiggan and Ballyconnell Senior Citizens Community Alert Alarms, will be held in Ballyconnell Hall on 11th April at 8p.m. Tickets €5 and a door prize on the night. Good support appreciated.

COFFEE MORNING

A Coffee Morning in aid of Daffodil Day is being held in the Tara Arms, Tullow on Friday 21st March from 10a.m. to 12 noon. Your support would be appreciated.

PARISH LOTTO

SYMPATHY

Sympathy is expressed to the Timmins Family Coolkenno on the recent passing of their sister Sinead Timmins Dunne, Steeple View Cresent and late of Coolkenno. Sinead is survived her husband Jimmy, sisters Catriona, Orla, Elaine brothers Simon and David, extended family neighbours and friends. Burial took place in St Patrick's Cemetry Tullow. May Sinead rest in Peace.

CRETTYARD

HANDBALL CLUB

At the National Cumann Na Mbunscol finals in Kingscourt Cavan Josh and Jonah Kelly Mayo N.S. had a very successful outing while representing Leinster as part of the Provincial team of six.

Playing at under 11 they won 4 of their six games against the other provinces and received beautiful Cumann Na Mbunscol All Ireland medals along with Leinster jersies a great honour for the two brothers and their school.

In the Leinster Juvenile Semi Finals on Saturday last our young players were just not able to reach the heights of last year when Ciaran Burke in the Under 12 Singles lost out to Kyle Dunne Kk on a scoreline of 13-15 3-15 while Conor Mulhall at Under 14 lost to Ciaran Cooney Kk 4-15 5-15. Congrtulations to the Cullohill Club on reaching finals in 4 grades.

BRIC A BRAC SALE

There will be a sale of Bric a Brac in aid of St Clare's Hospitality, Food Kitchen, in Parish Centre on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd March. Your support would be most appreciated. Our food appeal continues during Lent. Presently we are giving out up to 120 food parcels a week.

We are surviving because of donations and the huge number of volunteers helping out. To help make the Lenten Season more meaningful we invite people to leave non-perishable food items in the baskets at the church doors and in the Parish Centre and these will be used to help make up our food parcels.

SOLEMN NOVENA

The Ninth Solemn Novena begins on Monday 5th May and will run for nine consecutive nights. We invite people during Lent to place their petitions in the petition boxes in St Clare's.

The Theme for this year's Novena is "Our Faith - Our Story" and each night of the Novena a guest speakers will speak on this theme. A table quiz in aid of Killeshin FC will be held in The Glenside lounge, Killeshin on this Friday March 21. The quiz starts at 9pm and a table of four costs EURO 40.

GOVERNEY PARK

Governey Park Residents Association meeting in Graiguecullen clubhouse this Wednesday 19 of March in Graiguecullen GAA clubhouse. The Association would encourage all residents to attend as they wish to discuss the upkeep of the estate also they are hoping to organise some fundraising in the near future. They also hope to establish the committee at this meeting. So please show your support.

KILLESHIN FC

DOG FOULING

Dog fouling has been a persistent problem in the grounds of St Fiacc's Primary School. Dog waste is a serious danger to the health of the children. Please be advised that no dogs are allowed on green areas or playgrounds. Dogs are not permitted in the school grounds while children are on the premises. We appreciate your co-operation with this matter.

K FACTOR

The K Factor Talent Competition is back. Qualifying dates are 22nd and 29th March in Killeshin Hall at 8pm. Final will be held on Saturday 5th April.

FIRST PENANCE

A meeting of all parents of children preparing for First Penance from Killeshin NS will take place in the parish Centre next Thursday 20th March at 7pm and a meeting for parents of children from Graiguecullen NS at 8pm in the Parish Centre on the same night. This is a very important sacrament for your child.

KILLESHIN GAA JUVENILE

Training for the Juveniles restarts next Sunday 23 at 11.15 and all new children are welcome who wish to play and also remind those who may not have registered they can do so at training. Thanks to all who supported our County Board draw fundraiser, this has enabled the purchase of new equipment for coaching sessions. Congratulations to Club member Shane Whelan who was a prize winner.

PIPE BAND

Killeshin Pipe Band Recruitment Day is next Sunday 23 March at 3pm in the band hall Killeshin. All Welcome. Killeshin Pipe Band "Gathering" May Sunday in Glenside Lounge to celebrate the bands 50 Anniversary.

PRE-BAPTISM MEETING

The next meeting for parents who are presenting their child for Baptism will be held on Monday 7th April from 7 to 8.30pm in the Parish Centre. All parents who are having their child baptised during April and May are asked to attend.

LADIES GAA

Graiguecullen Ladies GAA this year's AGM will be held on Friday 21st March at 8pm. Anyone interested in getting involved with teams or on to join the committee are invited to come along.

St. Lazerian's Community Games: Well done to the St Lazerian's u13 boys and girls basketball teams who won county gold and also to the u11 mixed team who were knocked out in the semi-final. Thanks to everyone who helped out and made the running of the county finals in old Leighlin a great success.

A new 6 week session of our Fit camp will begin on 19th March. We have had a very successful first session over the past 6 weeks and all members have found it both very beneficial and enjoyable. The Fit Camp is running every Monday and Wednesday night from 7-8pm and Saturday 10am-11am in St Joseph's soccer pitch in Tinryland. The Fit camp is run by certified trainers and is designed to cater for all levels of fitness. The first night is free for newcomers, so please feel free to come along and see what we do. Everyone is welcome. Costs depend on how often you attend. Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions will run to suit demand.
