Town Council's Final Meeting

The curtain came down on Muine Bheag Town Council after 160 years when the historic final meeting took place in the McGrath Hall on Thursday evening, May 15. Past Councillors and their guests were invited to join the members after the meeting for light refreshments and a look back at the work of the Council over the years. Town Clerk, Janette O'Brien, told those present that since she took over the job three years ago she was very impressed by the community spirit she found in the town and the people of Muine Bheag's great sense of pride in their place, which was a key factor in the town winning the national Pride of Place Competition 2012. She said "the Town Council/Commission has been the driving force behind so many improvements to the town, including upgrading of the Town Park, swimming pool, McGrath Hall, industrial estates on Royal Oak Road, Rudkins Mill, the Court House and more

Town Manager, Seamus O'Connor, said the abolition of the Town Council was a real loss for the town and he thanked the Councillors for their hard work on behalf of the community, also former Councillors and Council staff who were involved with the Councillors over the years. A presentation was made to each Town Councillor as a token of appreciation for their commitment and dedication.

Sean O'Shea, now retired, who was Town Clerk in Muine Bheag for many years, said: "The demise of the Town Council is, indeed, a sad occasion as it has been in operation for 160 years, but I know the townspeople will fight back and continue to promote their town." County Manager, Tom Barry, made a presentation to Janette O'Brien, Town Clerk, who worked tirelessly to promote the town at every opportunity and her energy, enthusiasm, commitment and dedication were very much appreciated.

Cathaoirleach Cllr. Joe Manning ended the meeting with some good news. He announced that the apartments at the back of the Manor House in Market Square have been bought by a consortium and work will start in two weeks time to bring them up to a high standard. Cllr. Manning said a deal has been brokered between the consortium and Carlow County Council. The owners will lease the apartments to the Council for a period of 25 years at which time the Council will take over ownership.
