CONGRATULATIONS -- Well done to Conor McCarney, who won a trip To Strasbourg for four days on the Graduate.ie website.
The 'Graduate Online Youth Quiz' is a free on-line educational Quiz for primary and post primary students throughout Ireland. The aim of the Quiz is to increase students' civic, social and political awareness in an innovative, fun and engaging manner. The Quiz encourages students to develop an understanding of how various public institutions work, how they interact with young people and how they impact upon their everyday lives, as well as developing their Internet and computer skills. Conor was thrilled to win and is looking forward to the trip.
Well done to Ronan Byrne a LC student from last year who was recently awarded the Entrance Award in Trinity College Dublin where he is studying. Ronan will receive a bursary on foot of his high performance in the Leaving Cert last year.
TRIP TO NEWGRANGE
A large number of Art students travelled to Newgrange to see the impressive Neolithic structure in early January. Newgrange is interesting from both a historical and artistic point of view. It is the finest of some 26 ancient tribal burial chambers in the Boyne River Valley north of Dublin. A great round tomb with fine rock carvings, Newgrange is about 5,000 years old - making it centuries older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt and a thousand years older than Stonehenge. Newgrange's astronomical alignment, striking round shape and spiral designs all add to the mystery and wonder of this ancient site, and prompting much speculation as to its purpose and meaning. The students benefitted greatly from the trip.
YOUNG SCIENTIST EXHIBITION
1st and 2nd years from Colaiste Eoin were amazed at the wealth of knowledge on display at The Young Scientist Exhibition. They wandered through the various projects taking time to ask questions and seek inspiration. The students were enthused so much in fact that many are planning their own projects for next year. We wish them well.
