A new book 'Country School Remembers - Ballymartin N.S' which charts the history of Ballymartin N.S, with memories from pupils and teachers, complemented by a rich array of photos, is available in Kiernan's of Borris, The Little Shop, Muine Bheag or contact Mick Kinsella 087 2038394.
It gives a fascinating glimpse into country life in a bygone era. The recent reunion event in the Step House was a resounding success. Many thanks to all who made it possible. Mrs. Anne Tighe Kiernan, Borris, was Principal of Ballymartin N.S. from 1954 to 1969. She came from teaching in a four teacher school in Killenard, near Portarlington, to Ballymartin, Borris in November 1954. The school had only one room with a big open fire for heat. When she turned the key in the door of Ballymartin N.S. for the last time in 1969 there were 27 pupils on the roll on that last day.
These 27 pupils were transferred by bus to Borris N.S. Mrs. Kiernan remembers the names of the 80 plus pupils she taught during her years teaching in Ballymartin N.S., is very proud of them and enjoys meeting them.
The Craft Shop in the Bagenalstown Family Resource will be open from October until end of December this year. If the shop is successful it will continue. At a meeting of all members in January next year it will be decided if they should continue or not.
