Two footballers from this area won awards at the 23rd Carlow GAA Awards Night held in The Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow, on Saturday night, 12th January. Hilary Griffin from the Ballon Club picked up the award for Ladies Football Player of the year while Kieran Nolan from The Fighting Cocks Club won the Intermediate Footballer of the year award. Well done and congratulations to both.


The annual meeting of Burrin Rangers Juvenile Club was held in Fr. Flood House on Tuesday, 22nd January where an excellent 2012 was reviewed and plans for 2013 were drawn up. The highlight of the year just past was the winning of both the girls under-12 camogie and football championships and the camogie championship by the girls under-14 side. The major project carried out in 2012 was the development of a hurling wall at the Fighting Cocks Grounds which was jointly funded by Burrin Rangers and The Fighting Cocks GFC. On a sad note the death of the club's president, Paddy Foley, in June was noted.

There was some major change in officials with the outgoing treasurer, secretary and assistant secretary standing down. Officers elected for the coming year were; joint president, Rev Brendan Howard PP and Rev. Edward Whelan PE; vice presidents, Marian Doyle, Pat Doyle and Tom Kealy; chairman, Michael Kinsella; vice-chairman, Maurice Buckley; secretary, Martin Doyle; assistant secretary, Padraig Holden; treasurer, Adrian Ryan; assistant treasurer, Darren Moore; Child Welfare officer, Maurice Buckley and ASAP, Eilis Quinn.


The annual meeting of Kilbride GFC was held in the Club House on Friday, 18th January. Outgoing chairman, Jim Foley, reviewed the year and he thanked the management of both the senior and junior teams and the committee for their work throughout the year.

The officers elected for the coming year were; chairman, Jim Foley; secretary, Lisa Smith; treasurer, Nellie Doyle, PRO, Colin O'Toole and County Board delegate, Liam Foley.

Training has now resumed every Tuesday and Thursday night at 8pm and all new members are welcome. Membership for the coming year is €50 per adult, €20 for students and a new non-active membership of €20 can now be paid for anyone who wishes to join the club but is unavailable to play or help out.

The club will hold its Dinner Dance on Friday, 22nd February in the Seven Oaks Hotel Carlow starting at 8.30pm. Tickets cost €20 each.

The AGM of Cuchulainn Rounders Club will be held in Fr Flood Clubhouse, Ballon on Tuesday, 12th February at 8pm. All players, members and supporters are welcome to attend.


The Ballon ladies sponsored drinking ban is well underway and sponsorship may be given to any of the players. All support greatly appreciated. Training continues in Ballon Hall on Friday evenings from 7.30 to 9pm and on Sunday mornings at 10am in James Morris Park. All new players welcome.


The Fighting Cocks GFC will hold its annual Dinner Dance in the Seven Oaks Hotel on Friday, 8th February. Tickets, costing €25 each, are now on sale from any committee member or from Finbarr O'Connor on 087 2779039.


More than eighty people signed up to the Ballon Operation Transformation Group with an aim to get fit by follow the RTE programme and to support Monica Percy who is participating. Walks take place in the area, starting from Siopa Glas at 7pm, each night from Monday to Friday. If you haven't already joined it's not too late. Simply telephone Breda on 087 7820211for all the details or just turn up at Siopa Glas and remember to wear a high visibility jacket. Please note the change of time for the nightly walks.
