SONG AND STORYTELLING
The January session in the monthly series of Song and Storytelling will be held in Rathoe Hall on Sunday night next, 27th January starting at 8pm. As always, admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Why not go along and enjoy a great night out free of charge?
Ballon Ladies GFC held their annual meeting on Sunday, 13th January in Fr. Flood House where a very successful 2012 was reviewed. The following officers were elected for the coming year - chairperson, Laura Doyle; secretary, Pat Doyle; treasurer, Caroline O' Toole; assistant treasurer, Linda Redmond; PRO, Ellie Hegarty and Children's Officer, Ciara O'Brien. Trainers for the coming year will be Ger O' Shea, Pat Doyle and Neil Dermody. Elected to the committee were Amanda Doyle, Katie Brennan, Fiona Ryan, Niamh Mullins, Ann-Marie Brennan, Hilary Griffin, Cheryl Kehoe and Hailey O' Shea.
It was decided at the meeting that all players would undertake a six-week sponsored drinking ban in order to raise money for the players injury fund. Sponsorship may be given to any of the players. All support greatly appreciated.
Training will be held in Ballon Community Centre on Fridays from 7.30 to 9.00pm and on Sunday mornings in James Morris Park. All new players welcome.
FIGHTING COCKS AGM
The annual meeting of the Fighting Cocks GAA Club was held in The Clubhouse on Friday night, 11th January.
Outgoing chairman, John McDonald, looked back on a year of mixed emotions for the club. While there was great joy in winning the Carlow IFC for the first time there was disappointment that the victory did not carry automatic promotion to senior ranks for 2013 because of a restructuring of the championship competitions by the County Board, he said. Secretary, Niall Byrne, gave a full account of all club activities during the past year while treasurer, Matt English-Hayden's report showed the club finances to be in a healthy state.
Officers elected for the coming year were; joint presidents, Paddy Joyce and Paddy Roche; chairman, John McDonald; vice-chairman, J. J. Dowling; secretary, Niall Byrne; assistant secretary, Paul Hickey; treasurer, Matt English-Hayden, PRO, Finbarr O'Connor and County Board Delegates, Niall Byrne and Finbarr O'Connor.
Elected to the committee were John O'Toole, Keith Bolger, John Hennessy, Sandra O'Byrne, Mattie Dowling, Cathal Shanahan and Maurice Browne.
BURRIN RANGERS AGM
The annual meeting of Burrin Rangers GAA Club will take on Tuesday, 22nd January in Fr. Flood House at 7.30pm. All committee members, coaches and parents are invited to attend. Burrin Rangers caters for boys and girls football, hurling and camogie in the Ballon/Rathoe and Kilbride area.
COCKS DINNER DANCE
The Fighting Cocks GFC will hold its annual Dinner Dance in the Seven Oaks Hotel on Friday, 8th February. Tickets, costing €25 each, are now on sale from any committee member or from Finbarr O'Connor on 087 27790389.
The annual meeting of Ballon GAA Club will be held in Fr Flood House on Saturday, 2nd February at 7pm.All nominations and motions must be with the secretary, Billy Fanning, by Saturday, 26 January. At a recent club meeting votes of sympathy were extended to the O'Brien and Kelly Families, Kilbride on their recent bereavements.
Work has now commenced on the refurbishment of the Clubhouse to repair the damage caused during the recent breakin and the club wishes to acknowledge a generous donation made by Ballon/Rathoe Gun Club towards this. All lotto ticket sellers are reminded that the weekly draw is now being held on Monday nights and not Tuesday as heretofore.
Ballon ICA Guild will facilitate a First Aid Course in Ballon Old National School on Monday, 4 and Monday, 11th February from 7.30 to 9.30pm each night. The course will be sponsored by Carlow VEC. The guild's monthly meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month and new members are always welcome to go along. The guild extends its best wishes to Monica Percy who is taking part in Operation Transformation on RTE 1 at the moment.
Practice for the under-14 County Quiz finals will take place in Tuesdays in Rathoe Hall at 8pm. There are twenty places to be filled in the under-13 Choir and practice takes place on Fridays in Ballon NS at 7pm. Art practice for under8s takes place in Rathoe Hall on Tuesdays at 7pm.
RATHOE NS PARENTS
The Rathoe Community Christmas Disco was a great evening for both the parents and children of the parish. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. The Rathoe National School Christmas Draw was held on the night and the top 6 prize winners were as follows
1,€100-Aaron and Dylan Kane; 2, MP3James Byrne; 3,€30 voucher-Raymond Fitzgerald; 4,Supervalu Hamper-Simon Joyce; 5,Bottle of Paddy's- AnnMarie Brennan and 6,Bottle of Jameson-Olivia Mannion.
The winner of the Christmas Hamper in Ann O'Connor's Shop was Breeda McDonald. A special thanks to the O'Connor family for their continued support to both the Parents Association and Rathoe National School. Thank also to all the sponsors who donated prizes, parents, DJ Spike, Santa and everyone who helped out and supported.
A meeting of Ballon Improvement Group will be held in Ballon Old National School on tomorrow (Wednesday) night at 8.30pm. Volunteers are needed for the Siopa Glas and also for the Community Garden. if you have any spare time and would like to give a helping hand please go along to the meeting.
