CHESS TEAM WIN
The Ballon/rathoe under-12 chess team, winners of the national silver medal last year, are on the march again. On Friday night, 9 March they defeated Piercetown, County Wexford at Piercetown by 32 to advance to the Leinster semi-finals which will take place in Carlow on Sunday next, 25th March.
Members of the successful team were John Kinsella, Sandbrook (captain), Joe O'neill, Rathrush, Seamus Connolly, Ballymogue, Cormac Kinsella, Sandrook and Arron Goodwin, Forge Meadows with substitutes Marie O'neill, Rathrush and Kevin Maher, Ballylean.
The Ballon/rathoe under-16 team, who are also the current county champions, failed to emulate the success of the younger side and lost 2-3 to Crossabeg, County Wexford at the same venue. Members of this team were John O'neill, Rathrush (captain), Anna Tracey, Ballintrane, Sarah Bermingham, Ballintrane, John Cummins, Mullaunmore and Sean Tracey, Ballintrane with substitutes Joan Maher, Ballylean and Ben Goodwin, Forge Meadows.
SONG AND STORY
The March session in the monthly series of Song and Storytelling will be held in Rathoe Hall on Sunday night next, 25th March starting at 8pm. As always, admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Why not go along and enjoy a great night out free of charge?
Ballon GFC will hold its 34th Annual Dinner Dance and presentation of awards on Friday night, 13th April in the Millrace Hotel in Bunclody. Medals won in the Grange tournament will be presented at the function. Tickets cost €22.50 each and are available now from all the usual sellers and committee members. Music will be by the very popular 'Bits and Pieces' so a great night is assured. The Ballon Dinner Dance is one of the most popular functions in the parish every year so come along and enjoy a great night.
The Department of Education and Science has allocated €200,000 for the building of two new classrooms at Ballon National School. Rev. Brendan Howard PP signed the contract with DEB Construction last week and the classrooms will be completed in time for the school reopening following the summer holidays
A Coffee Day will be held at the home of the late Rita Nolan in Ballon Village on tomorrow (Wednesday) starting at 9.00am. until late that night. All monies raises will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society/ Carlow-kilkenny Homecare. Donations of daffodils and cakes would be appreciated.

To coincide with Daffodil Day 2012 a whist drive will be held in Aghade Hall on tomorrow (Wednesday) night at 8.30pm. All proceeds will be donated to Carlow/kilkenny Home Care Team. Your support of this very worthy cause would be appreciated.
Burrin Celtic Juvenile FC held a fundraising table quiz in Joe Doyle's Lounge on Friday night, 2nd March. The winning trio, who scored 90 out of a possible 100 marks, were John Fleming, Anne O'rourke and Alan Callaghan from Clonmore/coolkenno. Runners up, three marks in arrears, were Padraig Lalor, Niall Morrissey and Shem Lawlor from Ballykealey/forge Meadows. The questions were set and asked by Michael Dawson, Ballon.
Confirmation will be in Ballon at 11am and in Rathoe at 2pm on Saturday next, 24th March.
Neither Ballon or The Fighting Cocks got the start they wished for as the 2012 Carlow GAA season got under way last weekend. In the FL Div 2 Ballon lost by 112 to 2-13 to Rathvilly at the north Carlow venue with Keith Butler scoring 1-3 of their tally. The 'Cocks came from six points down at half-time to force a draw, 0-14 to 2-8, with Grange at Killerig. The Nolan brothers, Gary and Kieran, got seven of their sides points. Kilbride's Div 1 tie with Myshall was called off due to a bereavement.
