SENIOR CITIZENS OUTING

The Ballon/Rathoe Senior Citizens outing held on Wednesday 26th June attracted a large number of seniors, 72 in two buses, and by common consent was rated a total success.

The first stop was at the Green Isle Hotel in Clondalkin for soup and sandwiches. Then it was on to Croke Park, probably the reason for the large attendance, and it was well worth the visit. It took two hours to make the tour with very capable tour guides. There was a short film in the theatre which gave a 'behind the scenes guide' of the efforts and co-ordination required to host a big match, followed by a tour of every part, from the players shower rooms to the corporate boxes.

The turf, seen up close, was a masterpiece of grass husbandry. Everyone was impressed and Joe Whelan got the opportunity to sing in the player's lounge area and from the presidents balcony.

Next was the short trip to the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin which is a real jewel in a crowded suburbia. The weather was so kind and the sun shone down and walking around the Gardens was a real pleasure.

Lastly was the journey to Germaine's in Baltinglass for an evening meal and an impromptu sing along. The food and the service were good and it was a satisfactory ending to a satisfactory day. Full marks to the committee for their efforts. Pictures of the event can be viewed on www.ballonvillage.com

WON HOSEY CUP

Ballon-Rathoe Community Games area improved on their second place in 2012 to win the Hosey Cup for best overall area at the Carlow Community Games Athletics finals in Ardattin on the weekend 23/24 June.

A total of 92 children ranging in age from 5 to16 years represented the area over the weekend. Forty-two of the children collected a total of 58 medals from both individual and relay events. The massive medal haul included 7 gold medals for individuals who will go forward to represent Carlow at the National finals in Athlone in mid-August.

Great credit is due to the children and coaches who worked over the past number of months to prepare for a very enjoyable weekend. In true community spirit all the children taking part were given great encouragement from the large attendance of parents from Ballon-Rathoe.
