Sunday next, 14th July is Festival Day in Ballon an no stone is being left unturned by the committee of Ballon GFC to ensure that the day will be an entertaining one for children and adults alike. Proceedings get under way at 2pm.

The large programme of events includes three juvenile matches in football and camogie - all games featuring the local Burren Rangers Club while Ballon ladies will take on a team yet to be confirmed. A new event this year in the long puc competition.

The ever popular Dog Show will feature again and will be divided into several sections with a Perpetual Trophy for the overall winner. Sheep shearing exhibitions by Tom Fitzgerald will again feature while there will also be the usual athletic events for children from under-6 to under-16. For the younger kids, bouncy castles and slides, pillow fights, face painting and novelty competitions will be the order of the day.

Naturally the usual side shows like the wheel of fortune, bottle stalls, book stalls and nail driving, will again be present. The very popular burger stall will be open all day as will the shop and the tea stall where teas and scones will be available. All in all a greats day's entertainment is promised.


Ballon Improvement Group's Summer Nature Camp will be held on 16th, 17th and 18th July at three different locations- Malone's Fruit Farm, Altamont Gardens and Slí na Sceach at The Forge. The Camp is for children from 5 to 12 years and as places are limited early booking is essential. Contact Máire on 087 2424934.


An American Tea Party in aid of Parochial Funds will be held in Leinster Hills Golf Club on Thursday 25th July. Music will be provided by The Images. The 6th annual Katsy McCall Road Run in support of the Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care will be held on Sunday 21st July starting at Top Oil Service Station in Ballon at 1pm. Paul Kavanagh has sent us the following report on the progress to the refurbishment of Ballon Community Centre.

Week 3: No site progress was achieved on week 3. Despite rumours that this was due to insufficient funding, or lack of planning permission, the project resumed on Saturday 29 June. This was after reaching an agreement with the health board and creche as to the safest way to demolish the rear wall of the building.

Week 4: Excavations for the foundations and boundary wall were completed. The first concrete pour was on Friday 5 July. Fabrication of the new steel frame commenced in the workshop and it is due to site on 22 July.

A Habitat is a term used to describe the environmental condition that particular plants or animals like to live in. Every living creature needs a home whether it's in a tree bed-roomed semi-detached house or a burrow in the ground.

The launch of "Clonegal Habitat Survey" will take place on Thursday 11th July at 7pm in the community Hall. Dr. Betsy Hickey will give an overview of how the survey was conducted, reveal her findings (let's see what is living among us) and take a walk through the village and point out habitats she has discovered.

The Kildavin/Clonegal GAA lotto was held in Dunne's Lounge, Clonegal, on Sunday 30th June. There were no winners for the jackpot of €9,000. Numbers drawn were 1, 6, 7 and 24. One winner matched three was Chris Weafer. Winners of the attendance draw, Cora Coleman, Ciara Maher and Tommy Corrbally. Seller's prize goes to Ben Dunne. There will be a football Kelloggs G.A.A. Cul camp in Rathvilly GAA Club from Monday 15th July to Friday 19th from 10am to 2.30pm daily. U12 teams continued their league with a win over Tullow recently. U14 team travelled to Wolf Tones G.A.A. Club Meath to participate in the Leinster Feile on Saturday, 29th. U16 teams start their championship campaign on Wednesday, 3rd July, at 7p.m. with a match against Fenagh in Fenagh.

Any one who has books, not school books or magazines, dvd's or games and would like to donate them please leave them into the Club rooms any evening in the coming week during traning sessions.
