Askea ICA to resume after summer break

Askea ICA will resume after their Summer break on Wednesday 3rd September for their Monthly meeting at 7.30pm in Askea Parish Centre. New members would be very welcome - just come along for a few weeks and see what we do.
BALLON/RATHOE HERITAGE WEEK EVENT
Ballon Improvement Group will host the third annual Hedge School /Scoil Scairte at Slí na Sceach, The Forge, Kilbride on Saturday next 23rd August from 11.30am to 3.15pm.The clock will be turned back to the 1840s and children will experience the days of the Hedge Schools for the day.
Through this event the organisers hope to inspire an interest in nature and develop children and young people's appreciation for the natural world, encouraging them to respect and protect our environment. For some of the participants it will be their first experience of school!
Booking is advisable at the Siopa Glas in Ballon or to The Forge Restaurant. Also Máire on 087 2424934. This if a free event and is the areas contribution to Heritage Week. We also need an audience at the event so everybody is welcome.
SONG AND STORY
Rathoe Song and Story House will be held in Rathoe Hall on Sunday next 24th August at 8pm. Come along for a great nights entertainment from our talented musicians, singers and storytellers with Fear an Ti Seamus Dowling. There will also be a special presentation from ther local Tae-kwon-do club including their two students who represented Ireland in the World Tae-kwon-do Championship in Rome last month. Tea and refreshments on the night as usual.
The new Ballon Community & Sports Centre will be officially opened on Friday 5th September at 5pm by Rev Denis Nulty, Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin and Sean O'Brien, Irish Rugby International. All parishioners are welcome to come along and part take in the celebrations and there will be light refreshments served after the formalities.
MAKE AND DO
Due to popular demand a second three-day Make & Do course for the age group 9 to 13 years will be held in the Old National School in Ballon starting on today, Tuesday from 10am to 1pm. Items covered will be Card Making, Yeast Bread and Learn to Sew. The cost is €45 which includes all materials. Children will have items to bring home each day. Call Eileen or Margaret on 059 9159447.

BOXER MATTY IN POLAND
Congratulations to Matty O'Leary, Kildavin, who is on the Leinster development squad has been selected to represent Leinster in a major competition in Poland in September. Matty will arrive in Krakow from Thursday 18th - 21st September along with other team mates and managers. He will take to the boxing ring on Saturday 20th to represent his providence and county Carlow. Kildavin and Clonegal would like to wish Matty the very best of luck in his upcoming fight.
The Kildavin/Clonegal GAA lotto was held in Conway's Lounge, Kildavin, on Sunday 10th August. There were no winners for the jackpot of €7,600. Numbers drawn were 8, 10, 13 and 19. Winner matched three were Diarmuid Doran, Carnew, Maryann Gahan, Clonegal, Nellie Raleigh, Bunclody and C.S.P.A Coleman all receiving €40 each. Seller's prize goes Siobhan Hayden. Next draw will take place at in Dunne's Lounge, Clonegal on Sunday 24th August at 10.30pm with a jackpot of €7,800.

There is a Macra na Feirme Club, starting in the Clonegal / Kildavin area. LEAVING CERT RESULTS
There were many happy faces around the Parish of Clonegal and Kildavin when the Leaving Cert Results were announced. Congratulations to all the students who did the exams and the best of luck to each and every one as you embark on your chosen career.
Clonegal will participates in the all week long Heritage Week in County Carlow between Saturday 23rd to Sunday 31st. Weaver's Cottages, Clonegal: Visit the cottages which were built by Alexander Durdin to house local weavers in the late 17th century. Clonegal village was awarded a gold medal in the 2013 Entente Floral competition.
The cottage will be opened from Monday to Friday 2.00pm - 4.00pm. On Sunday 24th and Sunday 31st August 2014. Demonstration of weaving and spinning by John and Patricia Murphy will be held from 2.00pm - 4.00pm. For more information, please contact John McCabe, 053 9377575.
Heritage Week and Vintage Fair will be held in Huntington Castle on Sunday 31st August from 12.00 - 5.00pm. The Castle will open throughout heritage week for guided tours of this fascinating 17th century castle. 2ND CHANCE DEBS
Cathy Doyle Clonmore organiser of the recent 2nd Chance Debs in association with the Home to Rome Cycle challenge, would like to thank everyone who attended the Debs Ball on Friday 8th August in the Tablot Hotel Carlow.
The amount raised on the night was €1,055, and the proceeds will be shared between Eist Cancer Support Centre Carlow and Sock ovarian cancer awareness group Ireland.
Also many thanks to the Management and Staff of the Tablot Hotel and all the sponsers of the raffle prizes. Eist and Sock Ireland are very thankful to Cathy chief organiser of the night for her commitment to both support groups and Cathy hopes to make it annual event.

THE LATE SEAN WHELAN
Sympathy is extended to the Whelan family on the recent passing of their father Sean Whelan Rathnagrew, Hacketstown. Sean is survived by his sons, daughters extended family friends and neighbours. Burial took place in Knockanna cemetery. May Sean rest in peace.

Some members of the Leighlin Brass Band have recently returned from a band trip to Shipley, Yorkshire. Under the care of their conductor Norman Cree and his wife Christine, along with St Patrick's Brass and Reed Band from Kilkenny. They played in many successful engagements there with Hall Royal Brass Band from Shipley. It was an educational and fun-filled experience for all.

OPEN AIR PLAY
Lisnavagh House is hosting an open-air play on Tuesday evening, 19th August at 7.30 p.m. The Off the Ground theatre company will perform JASON & THE ARGONAUTS and judging from previous years, it should be a fun-filled and very entertaining evening!
The play is described as a tale of Greek myths and legends. It is a good idea to bring a blanket to sit on and even a picnic. The cost is €15 for adults, €10 for senior citizens and €7 for under-21s. Tickets available at the door or from www.offtheground.co.uk.
The Credit Union are again this year sponsoring two €500.00 grants for First Year Third Level Students. To be eligible for these grants all you need to do is submit a copy of confirmation of acceptance to College along with your application form.

Members of Tinryland Tidy Towns and local community were disappointed to discover that the two new pots of flowers worth €200 were stolen in the early hours of Tuesday last. These were put in place in June to enhance the village centre. Local Gardai have been informed of this theft.
This years Rockford 4 Mile Race will be held on Saturday August 30th at 5.30 pm sharp. There will be a special one mile event for children at 5pm prior to the race with medals for all finishers.
