A St Mullins farmer has been announced as the Carlow FBD Young Farmer of the Year county finalist.

Andy Corcoran will go on to represent the entire county at the semi-final of the 16th annual FBD Young Farmer of the Year Competition which is run by Macra na Feirme.

25-year-old Andy is a dairy farmer and has great plans to increase his herd to compete with larger producers. While a large drop in milk price would upset his plans, Andy feels like he has set himself realistic targets for the coming years.

In order to achieve his goals, Andy plans to improve grassland management to get more from his land and to put work in on existing farm infrastructure around the yard. Andy and the 27 other county finalists will compete in the national semi-finals, taking place on August 20 and 22, from which six overall finalists will make it to the rigorous final interview on September 2 in Bantry, Co Cork.

The aim of this prestigious competition is to recognise and reward the top young farmers in the country and entrants are judged according to a number of criteria including farm business initiative and innovation, levels of farm efficiency and enterprise quality, farm safety and environmental protection awareness, as well as agricultural knowledge and community involvement. The whole of Carlow will now be behind Andy as he battles it out on the national stage.
