Top honour for 'hawkeye' snapper

TWO action photographs with Carlow connections have made it into the AIB Photojournalism Awards Catalogue.

Freelance journalist Adrian Melia was chosen for his shot of a bird of prey taking off from a lady's head at the Woodlands Falconry in Rathwood, Tullow.

'I'm always looking for bizarre shots, I've made a career out of them,' said Adrian.

The picture, described as 'technically skilful' by judges, captures Martha the Harris Hawk lifting off from a woman's head.

In the sports section, jockey Patrick Mullins is featured battling through the waters at the Punchestown Festival. The photograph, Muddy Business, was taken by Morgan Treacy who works for INPHO Sports photography. Patrick is on Uncle Junior (in the yellow cap) as he battled through the water against Nina Carberry on Arabella Boy during the Punchestown Festival.
