Carlow country singer Derek Ryan will try his hand at being a radio DJ when he takes over Downtown Country on Northern Ireland Radio this Wednesday.

For one night only, the man from Garyhill, will be at the other end of the radio when he sits in for legendary country DJ, Big T, for the three hour slot from 7 p. m.

Behind the decks Derek will play many of the country classics that have influenced his career as well as requests for those listening in on radio or around the world online.

Downtown Country is the longest running country show on Irish radio, which has been running for nearly 40 years.

'I can't wait to present the show to the listeners,' he said.

'I'm really looking forward to jumping into Big T's chair. The pressure will be on to keep everyone as entertained as he does. I have big boots to fill.'

Carlow fans will be able to listen to Derek on 1026AM and also online at downtown.co.uk
