DAWN CHORUS

The Dawn Chorus event held at The Forge in Kilbride on Sunday morning, 12 May was an outstanding success with Paul Cutler, Bird Watch Ireland Expert and Head Gardener at Altamont, giving a short account of the various strands of each section of the Chorus.

The group took a walk around the wonderful hedgerow of Kilbride where many of the local birds make homes and feed in these mini-nature reserves.

The early Bird Breakfast at 'The Forge' was welcome and it was great to see people come from far and near for the event. The sing-along after the breakfast almost lived up to the Birds Chorus and also went down a treat. Thanks to 'The Forge', Ballon Improvement Group and all who helped and participated in this very special event.

BALLON'S GATHERING

Ballon's Gathering Event gets under way on Friday, 31 May with a first ever Night of Song and Story at Ballon GAA Clubhouse. All are invited and admission is free. Day two of this weekend event sees a Children's Fancy Dress Competition and Disco in Ballykealey Hotel on Saturday, 1 June at 7pm sharp. There will be lots of categories and prizes galore for children up to 14 years.

The big event of the weekend will be the Barbeque, also at Ballykealey Hotel on Saturday. This kicks off at 9.30pm and there will be a live band for dancing. And if that is not enough a disco will get under way from 12.30am until late. The event is being organised by Ballon GAA Club and they would welcome your support.

BURRIN SENIORS WIN LEAGUE

Burrin Celtic won the Carlow Seniors League Div 1 last week end, gaining the three points they needed to clinch the championship with a 2-0 defeat of Killeshin FC at the County Laois venue. Burrin were crowned champions with two games to go in the competition relegating their Cup final conquerors, New Oak Boys, to the runners-up position.

Alan Kelly put Burrin ahead from the penalty spot after 15 minutes and the same played netted their second goal to leave the Ballon side two ahead at the interval. Suffice to say, that while Killeshin tried hard to reduce the deficit in the second half they were unable to breach the Burrin defence and the Ballon side, backboned by players who had won the Premier Div three times back in the late '90s and early '00s, were champions.
