Bagenalstown Festival 2013

THIS year's Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The committee would like to thank everyone for supporting their recent Flag Day collection and to everyone who bought tickets for the Summer Madness Grand Draw.

Tickets are still available at a cost of €5 from any committee member. 1st Prize €500. 2nd Prize €300 and 3rd Prize €200.

The stage is set, the judges are ready and entries are still coming in for The Voice of Bagenalstown Competition, which takes place on Sat. July 20 at 8.30pm in the McGrath Hall. Tickets €5 available on the door. Judges for this event are Kelly McDonagh Mongan, runner up of this year's Voice of Ireland, Tom Dowling from KCLR and Janette O'Brien from Carlow County Council.

EMIGRANTS' DANCE

Tickets are still available for the Emigrants Dinner Dance in the Lord Bagenal Hotel on Thurs. July 18 at 9pm. Music by Catherine and the Images. Tickets €25.

WHEELBARROW RACE

Entries are still in time for this year's Wheelbarrow Race. Teams of two. Wheelbarrows will be supplied. If interested give your name of Paddy Kiely. Planning is underway for the Family Fun Day which takes place on Sunday, July 21.

KING AND QUEEN

The Festival King and Queen of Bagenalstown Competition. Winners will get €50 each plus a sash and tiara/crown. Entries, over 18 years of age, can be given to Leann O'Brien or M. Egan. If you have a modified car that you are proud of, you can display it on Sunday, July 21 at the Modified Car Display.

BENEFIT NIGHT

BEAM Bagenalstown Gala Benefit Night will take place at Kilkenny greyhound track on Sunday, July 21. First prize: B&Bs x three plus two dinners for two people at any one of the fourteen great National Hotels. Second Prize: Three one-day tickets for two to Galway Races. 3rd Prize: Two All Ireland Semi Final tickets. 4th Prize: Heritage Crystal 9" Cathedral Salad Bowl plus numerous other prizes.

MUINE BHEAG LIBRARY

The Big Read is back. Sign up to get your Big Read Loyalty Card. This is a reading initiative aimed at boys and girls between 6 and 12 years old. The Big Read is running in all branches of Carlow Library from Mon. July 1 until Saturday, August 31.

LIBRARY EVENTS

CALLING PAST PUPILS

Muine Bheag Vocational School is holding a Celebration Weekend in October to mark its 50th Anniversary. Friday, October 4: Celebration Service, Unveiling of Commemorative Piece, Craftwork and Photograph Exhibition, with entertainment and refreshments. Admission free. Saturday, October 5: Open Day in the School (12pm - 3pm), Gala Dinner Dance in the Lord Bagenal Hotel at 8pm. Music by Quatro. Tickets €25 available from the school - 059 9721335. This will be a great opportunity to catch up with old school friends and teachers.

YOUTH PROJECT

Activities for teenagers at Bagenalstown Youth Project are in full swing and it's the first summer at Gleann na Bearú Community Building, Bagenalstown. Sports Club meets each Tuesday, 2pm-4pm.

The young people have already been swimming and surfing so join in and don't miss out on any more exciting sports.

The next Steps Activity Days is for all young people moving from 6th Class to 1st Year. There will be five sessions and activities will include film making, art, sport and games.

The emphasis is on having fun, making new friends and helping young people find answers to questions they may have about secondary school. A fashion design camp and a dance camp will take place during August. Anyone who wishes to get involved in any of the activities, can contact Karen, Youth Worker with Carlow Regional Youth Services on (087) 6695876.

10K FUN RUN

The Fun Run in aid of Bagenalstown Family Resource Centre will take place on Sunday, July 21, starting from the McGrath Hall at 11.30am. You can take part for free if you double your entry fee of €20 for runners and €10 for walkers in sponsorship. Sponsorship cards available from The Centre. This year a 5k Family Walk/Treasure Hunt will be included, beginning from the McGrath Hall at 11.45am. Cost €5 per family. Further information from Olive on 059 9722028.

The unveiling of a Community Mosaic will take place at 2pm in the Town Park..

INVESTITURE 2013

The 1st Bagenalstown Baden Powell Scout Troop held a very successful investiture ceremony recently in St. Andrew's Parish Church. During the ceremony the Beavers, Wolf Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts recited their respective promises before a capacity crowd.

Many young members and leaders were also presented with certificates arising from various courses attended during the year.

MINI WORLD CUP

Muine Bheag Joint Policing Committee, in conjunction with Muine Bheag Town Council and An Garda Siochana, Muine Bheag, will host the Mini World Cup 2013, commencing on Friday, July 12 with the finals on Saturday, July 20. Entry is free. Age groups 8yrs to 11yrs boys and girls and 12yrs to 15 yrs boys and girls. Entries and enquiries to 085 155236 by July 8.

CHARITY CONCERT

Dublin City Ramblers will appear in the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow, on Friday July 19, in aid of The Holy Angels Day Care Centre, Carlow. Doors open 9pm. Admission €10. Tickets available on the door, or from the Dolmen Hotel. This event has been organised by the Night Owls who will be supporting on the night.

COUNTRY DANCING

The Summer 2013 Country Dance Nights at the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow, will start on Wed. July 17 when Declan Nerney performs. Sean Cuddy on Wed. July 31. Jimmy Buckley on Wed. August 14 and Carlow's own Derek Ryan (Garryhill) on Wed. August 21. Mike Denver will provide the music on Wed. August 28. Doors open at 9.15pm and dancing is from 10 till late.
