YOU WOULD have got long odds on Danny Curran making it onto the Wicklow GAA honours list this year but the Arklow Rocks man reeled back the years to earn the title of Junior C hurler of the year.
Curran starred for the Arklow side as they slugged it out over two matches with Kilmacanogue/Enniskerry before laying claim to the Junior C championship crown thanks to some starring performances by the veteran. But, as Curran explains, his Junior C hurler of the year trophy shouldn't be too lonely on his mantelpiece.
'It was nice at this stage of my career, I've just gone 43! I won a Senior award before, the VEC used to do Senior awards back in the 90's and in '92 I won the Senior player award so 20 years later it was nice to pick up another award.'
He unselfishly claims that winning the championship was far, far more important to him, stating that 'that competition was kind of special the way it turned out'.
Does Curran plan to hang up the hurley, or is he going to stick it out for a bit longer?
'Maybe a few more months! I'll have to take it month by month. The aches and the pains, they just keep coming. I'm keeping the club physio busy!
'It's just nice to be out there. I'm not alone, there's plenty of others lads out there around the county at my age!
'It's enjoyable, it keeps you ticking over. It keeps you healthy', he explained, before adding tongue in cheek: 'I'm going to go for the Senior award this year!'
