THE MAGNIFICENT achievements of our Olympic boxing team including Bray's Katie Taylor and Adam Nolan are proving to be a tremendous boost for all the Amateur boxing clubs in Wicklow so much so that a number of the clubs including Arklow have had to close to membership and are now taking names for the next joining date at the beginning of January.

Arklow have more than doubled their membership and have had to increase sessions.

They now train Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 6pm to 7pm, 7pm to 8pm and from 8pm to 9pm for the different age groups.

There is a great interest too in women's boxing with more than a dozen new female members hoping to follow in Katie's footsteps. Arklow are lucky that five coaches attended and passed their IABA coaching exams during the summer and now have nine coaches working voluntarily in the club.

The club are also delighted that three committee members, coaches David Kenny Eoin Pluck and club secretary Linda Morgan have qualified as Leinster Judging officials having attended courses and passed their judging exams.

Arklow are currently preparing for two coming tournaments.

The first one is a test match tournament in the club gymnasium on Wednesday, October 17 which will see 18 local boxers in action some having their first contest. Doors open 7pm. Admission - adults €5, children free.

Their major annual sponsored tournament is on Friday November 9th in the Arklow Bay hotel. 15 bouts on the night will include what promises to be a great top of the bill contest between Arklows Intermediate light heavyweight champion Sean Allen and Ireland's second most decorated boxer (second only to Katie Taylor), the twice World Youth champion, World Junior champion.

European Senior champion and this year's Irish Senior light heavyweight champion having totally outclassed Olympic silver medalist Kenneth Egan in the National Seniors, from Moate in Westmeath, the fantastic Joe Ward.

Arklow B.C. also ask you to support Tracy Walker who is kindly representing the club in the Strictly Come Dancing competition run by Avonmore Musical Society in November in the Arklow Bay Hotel.

Arklow are also getting ready for their Annual fiveweek draw which this year starts on Sunday 25th November. Tickets available now from the usual sellers

More details in the coming weeks.
