Arklow end the year on a high

ARKLOW BOXING CLUB finished the year with a test match tournament in their gym on Wednesday night.

The club was hosting Ireland's strongest club Ryston from Newbridge with Our Lady of Fatima BC Wicklow involved in four other contests.

The first contest was Dean McCarthy who had a real battle with Luke Kelly from Our Lady of Fatima. Both boys were prepared to mix it which gave the crowd a good idea of what was to come.

In the second bout Ethan Fleming had a real battle on his hands when young Adam Sinnott from Wicklow came forward all the time throwing hooks with some success. Aaron Tukes stepped in for Darragh O'Shaughnessy who is injured to trade punches with Liam Gregory Hayes from the Our Lady of Fatima club. And in a good bout both boxers scored with good combinations to head and body.

Liam Somers boxed well and used his jab to keep the energetic Sean Byrne from the Wicklow club at bay in a good contest.

Sean Fleming was a year younger than his opponent Jamie Philips from Ryston but this didn't stop Sean from attacking throughout a good lively contest.

Ardriyi Kurlachenko was involved in a close contest with Mick Lamb also from Ryston finishing the contest with a good display of jabbing.

Eimhin McCormack also conceded a year to Luke Ennis from Ryston but kept the Ryston boxer under pressure with solid jabs and a cracking right hand.

Jason Breen had a great fight with Jimmy ward. Both boys exchanged combinations during all three rounds.

In a three-way spar Aaron O'Neill and Dillon Kinsella mixed it up with Chris McGurk of Ryston in an interesting bout. Both Arklow boxers seemed to be on top in this one.

In the first of the ladies bouts, Leah Browne was giving away a lot of height to Sinead Brennan but still moved forward with her guard high to block all the punches and score with her jab.

In the second ladies bout, Enya Conroy attacked from the start against Tory Dylan Ryston and was in complete control using her jab well.

Isabella Dempsey gave a fine display of boxing going forward and moving away. She also scored with fast twohanded attacks. Tomas Lynch boxed well against Paul Connors Ryston and countered well with his left hand.

Owen Moore was giving away a year and weight to Martin Ward from Ryston and had to use all his ring craft to keep the strong Ryston boxer at the end of his jab.

Sean Crowley was in control against Joe Donnelly of Ryston, scoring with two handed attacks and using his reach to good effect.

Ryan Kenny had a great battle with John Maughan also from Ryston. Both boxers scored with attacks in a very even contest.

Liam Moore was Arklow's last boxer in action against Michael Connors from the Ryston club and was in complete control, scoring at will with both hands.

Liam used only his jab in the last two rounds. The club will re-open for all members on Monday January 7 at the usual training times.

"On behalf of Arklow BC coaches, committee and boxers may we wish all our supporters sponsors parents and friends and officials from the various clubs who helped us out in any way a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year," said Willie Walker after the event.

"Thanks also to Brendan Lawrence and his team at the Wicklow People for their excellent coverage during a tremendous and successful busy year for Arklow Boxing club," he added.
