The Wicklow Rose competition will take place in Germaine's of Baltinglass on Saturday, March 22.

Sixteen roses from all over Wicklow will contest the event, which will be assessed by a panel of three judges. They will each undergo a 15-minute, one-to-one interview before group interviews start around 3:00p.m., followed by a stage rehearsal before the event itself kicks off at 8:00p.m. It will take place in two halves, with contestants performing party pieces going first. The show will finish up at around midnigh and will be followed by a disco.

The winner will then go forward to represent the Garden County at the regional finals in Portlaoise from May 29 to June 1, where she will compete against 61 other contenders for 26 spots in the Rose of Tralee itself in August.

This is the first time that the event has been held in West Wicklow, and organiser Louise Fleming claims it has already been of great benefit to Baltinglass. 'It's been great for the town,' she enthused. 'There's a great buzz and a great atmosphere about the place.'

Tickets are available for €20 in Germaine's or entry can be paid on the night, with doors opening at 7:45p.m. Anyone wishing to reserve a ticket can contact Louise on 0858111555.
