Two buses driving a large group of American tourists around some of Wicklow's most heralded locations were broken into, resulting in the theft of a number of items including five passports.

The visitors were students from the US who were part of a American Schools cultural visit to Ireland.

The group were touring the early Medieval monastic settlement at Glendalough on Friday when both buses were broken into some time between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m..

The two vehicles were parked in the Glendalough Visitor's Centre carpark.

A number of bags belonging to the students were stolen, while the contents of other bags were also removed.

Among the missing items were five US passports.

Later in the day some of the stolen objects were recovered by Gardai from a carpark in west Wicklow, including four of the passports.

A member of the public found one of the passports in the carpark and handed it in to Blessington Gardaí.

Gardaí then carried out a more detailed search of the same carpark and discovered three more passports, as well as other items belonging to the American visitors.

The group of tourists will be based in Ireland until April and will be reunited with the recovered passports and other items before they return to Dublin next week.
