KILCOOLE ATHLETE Fionnuala Britton was congratulated by President Michael D Higgins after making history in Budapest at the weekend.
Britton became the first athlete to successfully defend her senior women's European cross country title.
She defeated Portugal's Ana Dulce Felix in a time of 27.45 and helped win the gold medal for Ireland in the team event.
'I want to offer my sincere congratulations to Fionnuala Britton on her outstanding achievement of retaining the European cross country title over the weekend,' said President Higgins. 'She showed great courage and determination in very difficult running conditions.'
'It was more or less the perfect day,' said Fionnula. ' When I crossed the line I could hardly believe it and then when I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that we had won the team it was the best feeling ever. .'
Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring also congratulated the 28-year-old athlete. ' Fionnuala made history in Budapest in freezing conditions on a snowfilled course,' said Minister Ring.
