PO raiders used lump hammer

June 1994

Gardai in West Wicklow examining last Friday's armed robbery at Blessington Post Office were this week examining a lump hammer left at the scene by one of the raiders.

Two men wearing full-face balaclavas got away with an estimated £2,500 when they held up a member of staff and customers at the post office at 11.15 a.m. last Friday morning.

The Post Office clerk was working alone at the time when the raiders, armed with a handgun and a lump hammer, entered the premises and demanded money.

They then threatened two customers, one of them an elderly man, forcing the clerk to hand over a bag of cash before fleeing the scene on a high-powered motorbike they had parked outside.

Though shocked, the Post Office clerk was able to raise the alarm and alert the Gardai to the scene.
