The woman, who didn't want to be named, said she was walking home on Tuesday evening last with her two young children and a family dog when a pit bull started attacking her dog.

She said a man ran out of a house and kicked the pit bull to stop the attack but the pit bull then bit the woman on the hand.

The ambulance and the gardai were called and the woman received medical treatment at the scene.

She was then brought to Loughlinstown Hospital by family where she received a number of stitches had the wound dressed.

'My children were distraught when they saw our dog and then me being bitten. There was blood everywhere even when I wrapped a towel around it, the blood just kept coming. At the hospital I received a tetanus injection and I'm also on antibiotics as well because there's a fear of infection from the bite.'

The woman said gardai have since informed her that the pit bull is to be put down.
