Arklow woman Dorothy Scanlon was tripping the light fantastic as she 'tangoed' her way around the dancefloor in Enniscorthy for a Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser.

Dorothy, who is blind, took to the floor on Sunday, in the Riverside Hotel, Enniscorthy, with her dance partner, 15-year-old Karen Cloke from Courtnacuddy, Enniscorthy, to raise vital funds for St. Patrick's Special School, Enniscorthy, and the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Dance teacher Martina Leacy who organised the charity fundraiser said Dorothy, who attended a similar event run by Martina last year, had expressed an interest in dancing and following on from that Martina undertook to teach her.

'When she came down last year she had her guide dog with her and said she'd love to learn and I thought it was a good challenge to take on. It's worked out really well and she has shown a huge interest in it.

'Obviously it was a challenge because she has no sight at all and now uses a cane instead of a guide dog but she has shown great aptitude and uses her senses to know where she is going on the dancefloor.

'It's been fantastic to see someone of her disability to learn the tango which is one of the harder ballroom dances to learn and she's leading it and showing great flair.

'She was partnered by Karen Cloke from Courtnacuddy and this was Karen's first year taking part and they both did a fantastic job.'

Martina said Dorothy has been going to lessons twice or three times a week and now that she has finished with the Strictly Come Dancing competition, she wants to keep on dancing. 'In fact Laura and Dorothy are going to take part in a Christmas talent show in aid of Sunbeam House', said Martina.

'It's been great to see how much she has come on and to see how much dancing has given her.'
