Disposal of a Council house on agenda

THE disposal of a council house on the agenda for Monday's Wicklow County Council meeting has been deferred until an upcoming housing meeting because councillors felt they weren't provided with enough information to make a final decision.

The 0.016 hectares adjacent to Baltinglass East was to be disposed of to Shay Byrne of Ballycullane, Castledermot, Co. Kildare.

Cllr. Edward Timmins said he believed the property in question was a council house and wondered if it could have been refurbished and allocated to someone on the waiting list.

'We are lacking information to make a decision. I did receive the notice of disposal but the level of detail was very sparse.'

Cllr. Tommy Cullen said he had never received the notice of disposal.

'There is a huge housing shortage in the area. I never got a notice of disposal which is strange or maybe it's not that strange at all.'

Council officials from the Housing Section said the house had been repossessed but wasn't brought on stock because the cost of refurbishment would have been between €60,000 and €100,000, while the only proposal from the Government Department was to buy it back if the refurbishments cost €5,000 for re-letting.
