Wicklow County Council went on the defensive this week over sending its members and two officials on a four-day junket to Denmark.
Many of those who headed out to Copenhagen on Wednesday morning, including the Chairman Cllr. Thomas Honan, could not be contacted in advance despite several efforts to do so.
And apart from the fact that the trip is likely to rile members of the public over the cost, it has also upset the group opposed to the proposed landfill site at Ballynagran in Wicklow, who were turned down on a request to send a representative at his own expense on the Denmark trip.
Members and officials on the junket are: Deputies Johnny Fox and Liz McManus, Senator Dick Roche and Cllrs. Thomas Honan, Michael Lawlor, Pat Vance, Joe Behan, George Jones, Jimmy O'Shaughnessy, John Byrne, Vincent McElheron, Nuala Ahern, Jim Ruttle, Vincent Blake and Kevin Ryan. Assistant County Manager Eddie Breen and Staff Officer Ultan McCabe are the two officials on the trip.
