In stark contrast to the ugly scenes in Dublin over the May Bank Holiday weekend, the people of Bray have been praised for their exemplary behaviour and good manners as the town welcomed Cyprus to the European Union.

Speaking to the Bray People on Tuesday, Leas Cathaoirleach of Bray Town Council, Cllr Brid Collins, said both she and the Cypriot President, Tassos Papadopoulos, were highly impressed with the appearance of the town on the day.

And furthermore with the people of the town who turned out in large numbers for the Day Of Welcomes.

'As Leas Cathaoirleach I had the honour of presiding on Saturday and I'd like to thank everyone who made the day such an overwhelming success including the members and staff of Bray Town Council.

'But particularly I'd like to say well done to the people of Bray for welcoming Cyprus, their attitude and the law and order that was observed in Bray over the weekend,' she stated.

Cllr Collins went on to thank all the businesses on the Seafront who kept the busy area free of litter at all times - a fact which was remarked upon by President Papadopoulos.

Elsewhere, Cllr Collins praised the garda’ without whom she argued the festival would not have been possible.

And in another tribute, Cllr Collins singled out her colleague, Minister of State, Dick Roche and she said the town was lucky to have him working on its behalf.

'It was a great honour for the town of Bray to host Cyprus on such an historic occasion and that was due in no small part to Minister Roche,' she stated.

Cllr Collins concluded by saying the town should now capitalise on what had been achieved over the weekend.

'I've never before got the kind of feedback that I'm getting about the now and there is no doubting that Bray was fantastic.

'It was the biggest day for Bray in my lifetime, there was a buzz around the town and I would like to have more days like this in Bray,' she concluded.
